Self-Care For Moms: 3 Tips to Beat Overwhelm | Rose Gold Mama

Are you overwhelmed or feeling exhausted? Maybe you have gotten to the point of feeling so stressed out that you don’t care about anything and are just going through the motions day after day.  You are keeping the kids alive. Feeding them, taking them to activities. Simply, pushing whatever buttons to get things done without any joy. At work you are just checking boxes without engagement. Living life on autopilot is no fun and not what you deserve. Use these 3 tips to beat overwhelm and get back to being the woman you want to be.

3 Tips To Beat Overwhelm

Reprioritize your time

Take a moment to step back and see what it is that you are doing with your time, and with your life. Understand whether or not that’s what you want to do with your time. If not readjust. Yes, you have obligations but you do not have to do everything people ask of you.

Take a moment, go through everything on your plate. If there is something you run across that you don’t want to be doing, it’s OK to say,  “you know, this thing it is not my priority, this thing isn’t actually what I want to be doing with my life”  and let it go. It’s OK to have someone request your time and for you to decline. There is nothing wrong with saying to yourself and others “This thing isn’t something that is helping me to be better or helping my family” and moving it to the side.  In fact, it’s required for you to stop feeling overwhelmed.

Take Time For You

Now that you have cleared out your schedule, take some time for you. Take some time to do the things you need to feel better.  Actively put some joy into your life.

If you just want to sit with a cup of tea and relax. Do it. Maybe, your home isn’t a great place for relaxing, put it in a travel mug and head to the park or stop at your local coffee shop.

If you need some physical relief take a walk, go to yoga or try a Zumba class.

Go to a museum or the movies if they bring you joy and you haven’t been in a while.

You are the only one responsible for your joy. It’s really easy to depriotze your own needs when so many other seemingly important things need your time and energy. But mama, without you being at your best, those things will suffer too.  Get some joy in your life and not only will you feel better, it will radiate into the lives of your family and they will feel better.

Be Present With Family and Friends

Overwhelm creates an ongoing barrage of thoughts in your head. These thoughts keep you away from the moment you are in. They stop you from being present and further stimulate overwhelm.  To combat this, say to yourself, “hey I’m going to put all these thoughts to the side”. If that doesn’t help. Try taking a minute to write down all of the recurring thoughts. Sometimes getting them on to paper can help you to be free of them in your head for a while.

With a clearer mind and a desire to be present, spend time with those you care for. You can make plans or simply let life occur as it does. Either way, when you’re with friends and family, be in the moment.  It’s a challenge, but will help you to be less overwhelmed. If you find it hard to be present, then act present. You can do this by putting your phone away, looking your loved ones in the eyes, asking questions and listening to their answers.  I know that might be easier said than done, but with practice it will not only become second nature, it will be enjoyable.
