How to Secure Your Next Promotion

Do you ever worry you’re being passed over for a promotion?

If thoughts like “Where is my career going?” or “Why am I not being considered for advancement?” are familiar to you, you’re not alone. Many of us, especially working moms, experience these uncertainties, along with frustration and sometimes anger. Maybe you wonder if it’s because you’re a mom or not part of the so-called “boys club.”

I’ve been there. But I also know what it’s like to move up the ladder, having been promoted several times throughout my career——from Analyst to Manager, Director to Vice President and Senior Vice President  to Chief Customer Officer.. My journey has taught me valuable lessons on how to position yourself as the ideal candidate for a promotion.

Remember, there are factors we can’t control, but focusing on what you can influence is important.

Excel in Your Current Role

Success in your current position is essential. If you’re not excelling where you are, how can anyone justify putting you in an even bigger one? Here’s a tip: If you have your eyes set on a specific role, do your best to take on tasks that reflect the skills required for that position.

Don’t be afraid to show that you have what it takes to succeed by:

  • Taking on tasks that align with the new role.
  • Achieving excellence in your current duties.

The more people that you know the more opportunities come your way.

Communicate Your Ambitions

Let them know of your aspirations—after all, no one can read your mind. However, keep in mind that your approach matters greatly. Try to avoid focusing on titles. Saying “I want to be a director” or “I want to be a VP,” won’t get you very far. Instead, focus on expressing the skills you have and the impact you hope to make.

Here are some better ways to communicate your ambitions:

  • Express your desire to lead larger teams or manage more impactful projects.
  • Talk about how you want to contribute more to the company’s success.
  • Discuss your readiness to add value through your skills and capabilities.

With this strategy, people will more likely remember you when promotions roll around.

Build Your Network

Don’t underestimate the power of networking. It’s crucial to meet as many people as possible within and outside your company, as they can be advocates for your skills and ambitions. Networking doesn’t only open up job opportunities, but it can also connect you with potential mentors and new learning experiences. To expand your network, you can:

  • Attend conferences and virtual meetups.
  • Engage with both internal and external industry communities.
  • Be proactive in seeking out connections in your field of interest.

Networking not only raises your visibility but also positions you as a valuable candidate for future openings.

It’s About Impact, Readiness, and Visibility

In essence, these are the 3 actions you can take control of when hoping not to be overlooked for that next promotion: excelling in your current role, effectively communicating your ambitions, and expanding your network. While there are no guarantees, implementing these strategies will better position you for consideration when the next opportunity arises.
