Want to Advance Your Career? Stop Asking What and Start Asking Who

Hey there, mama. 👋

Let me guess… you’re already doing all the things. You’re showing up, juggling work, kids, meetings, deadlines, and maybe even remembering picture day at school (go you!). You’re constantly thinking, “What more can I do to move ahead in my career?”

Well, I’ve got a challenge for you. One that might just change everything.

I want you to think about WHAT you can do and WHO can help you move on to the next step

It’s Not Just About What You Can Do. It’s About Who Can Help You

Yes, your talent, your effort, and your credentials matter. But here’s the real talk: The biggest leaps in your career often don’t come from doing more. They come from being seen by the right people.

Most decisions about promotions, high-visibility projects, or leadership opportunities? They happen when you’re not in the room.

So, here’s the question I want you to ask yourself: Who is pounding the table for you when you’re not there?

Find Your Table-Pounder

You need advocates. Champions. People who see your brilliance, believe in your potential, and are willing to speak your name in the rooms that matter.

Ask yourself:

  • Who at your job sees your work and understands your value?
  • Who has the influence to speak up on your behalf?
  • Who’s already sitting at the tables you want a seat at?

That person might be your boss or someone outside your immediate team. Identify them. Then, take action.

Show Them You’re Ready

You don’t need another degree or to wait for “the perfect moment.” You’re already more prepared than you think. Here’s how to prove it:

  • Share your wins. Make your accomplishments visible—loud and proud.
  • Be direct about your goals. Let people know where you want to go.
  • Ask how you can grow. That shows you’re serious about your future.

Being visible and vocal isn’t bragging; it’s strategic. And you deserve to be seen.

Build Relationships, Not Just a Network

This isn’t about cold LinkedIn messages. It’s about real conversations with real people.

So go grab that coffee with someone you admire. Message a senior leader you respect. Ask about their path, and share your own.

Try this: “I’d love to hear more about how you got to where you are today. Can I treat you to a 15-minute coffee chat?”

You never know what doors a single conversation can open.

Your Career Is a Team Sport. So, Build Your Dream Team

Working moms are already doing the impossible. But here’s your reminder: You don’t have to do it alone.

So yes, keep up the amazing work.

But also, start asking:  “Who can help me get where I want to go?”

Because when you have the right who, the what gets a whole lot easier.

With love,
Whitnee
