How To Find Inner Peace And Happiness As A Busy Mom | The Savvy Working Mom

How do we find inner peace and happiness when guilt is a normal part of our day? Whether it’s letting your kids down, your colleagues, your husband, or yourself, you’re always worried about if you’re doing it right and if you’re doing enough. That guilt can make it hard to find inner peace and happiness. If you can stay connected to the three G’s, inner peace and happiness will become a regular part of your life.

The 3 Gs Of Inner Peace And Happiness

Grace

Giving yourself grace simply means being kind to yourself the way that you would be kind to your children or your best friend. When life gets tough, and you feel yourself start to come undone, you need grace the most. If your best friend showed up at your door totally frazzled, hair a mess, clothes disheveled, and the look of pain on her face, your immediate thoughts would be how can I take care of her. These are the same thoughts that you should have for yourself each and every day.

You deserve grace. Being kind to yourself and forgiving yourself will help you to feel more settled in your soul and joyful in your spirit. A great way to get started with giving yourself grace is to make a list of everything you should forgive yourself for. Write this down along with where you should be easier on yourself and then take action.

Gratitude

Gratitude is the attitude for a happy and peaceful life. With that being said, gratitude does not come easy for all of us. The good news is just like exercise, with practice, you can get stronger in this area. One way to do this is to take pen to paper. Each morning write down one thing that you’re grateful for. Every evening write down three things that you are thankful for from that day. It doesn’t matter how big or how small these things are; it only matters that it’s something you appreciate. A bonus here or a way to take it to the next level is to share what you’re grateful for with others.

Grounding

Being grounded in yourself is a direct line to inner peace and happiness. You need to know yourself to know what it takes to make you happy and to find inner peace. A great way to do this is through journaling. Therefore, take a moment on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, whatever fits into your schedule, to answer questions about yourself such as:

What brings me joy?

If I won $100 million, what would I do with it?

What do I want most for my family?

What do I want most for myself?

If I could give one piece of advice to my children, what would it be?

Furthermore, when it comes to journaling, there is no right or wrong way; simply put pen to paper and let your thoughts flow. As they flow, you’ll find yourself becoming more connected with yourself. You will find yourself becoming more grounded.

A Few More Ideas

The three G’s are a fantastic way to develop and maintain inner peace and happiness in your life. They are not the only ways; there are a few other tips to help you out.

Forgive

Forgive those who have wronged you. Holding on to a grudge doesn’t do anyone any good. It just keeps negative feelings and energy inside yourself. Also, it’s hard to find inner peace when you’re full of negative energy.

Certainly, forgiving does not mean forgetting. If someone wrongs you, don’t let them do it again. If someone wrongs you don’t accept that that’s how you should be treated. Forgiving simply means letting go of those negative feelings towards that person and moving on with your life.

Simplify

Simplicity leads to peace. In today’s busy world, all of the aspects of our life seem to get more and more complicated. Here are a few ways to simplify your life:

Sign-Up For Less

Reduce the number of things you own, say what you mean and mean what you say, follow through on your promises.

Be Present

Being present leads to inner calm and confidence that is hard to match. Practice being present each day. Just like gratitude, being present doesn’t always come naturally to us. The great news is if you work at it you can find yourself more and more present each day. An excellent way to start trying this is to put your phone away when you’re around the people you care about. Put the phone in a different room someplace where you can’t get to it and focus on those you care about. If you still find your mind wandering, then fake it until you make it. Look them in the eye ask them questions. And pretend to be present. Eventually, your brain will catch on and learn that being present is where it’s at.

Accept

The AA Serenity Prayer is a good one. If you haven’t heard it, it goes something like this, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Whether you are religious or not, the intent there is made for all of us. We simply cannot control everything, and in accepting this, we will find more peace. The one thing that we can always control is our reaction to what’s going on around us. Focus your energy on who you are and how you want to be as a person in any given situation. Then when the tough times come up, act according to your beliefs about yourself.

Meditate

Meditation is truly amazing. However, It may not seem easy to get started, but once you get over the hurdle and just try it, I’m sure you will love it. Meditation helps you to connect more deeply to yourself, relieve stress, and get better clarity on what you want in life. The best news about meditation is that it doesn’t have to take long. Even meditating five minutes a day will help. The craziest part is that you can do this anywhere, even on the subway train. Also, if you drive, you could take five minutes to meditate in your car before you head into the office. Simply close your eyes, breathe deep, and let your mind go. If you have not meditated before or would like guided meditation, there are plenty of apps out there to help you out. Just google free meditation apps and download the one that speaks to you the most.

Take Action

Inner peace and happiness is something we all deserve. And like most things that are worth having, it doesn’t come easily. That’s OK because it is simple to achieve if you just work at it. Above, you have several different tips to help you find the calm and joy that you deserve. Most importantly, pick one of the three G’s to start today, and then if any of the other ideas resonated with you, make a plan to implement it starting tomorrow.

Inner peace and happiness can be yours; you simply need to go after them.
